Griechenland hat für jede Jahreszeit touristisch interessante Regionen. Im Sommer sind es natürlich vorwiegend die zahlreichen Strände der Inseln und des Festlandes. Sonnen und Baden – und das in dem kristallklaren Wasser in Blau- und Türkistönen des Ägäischen oder Ionischen Meeres. Jährlich vergibt die „Stiftung für Umwelterziehung“ (FEE) die begehrte „Blaue Flagge“ für Strände und Marinas. Die Verleihung dieser Auszeichnung erfolgt nach sorgfältiger Prüfung der Wasserqualität und der Überprüfung der Umweltsituation. Diese international agierende Organisation wird durch nationale Organisationen unterstützt. In Griechenland ist das die „Griechische Gesellschaft für Naturschutz“ mit Sitz in Athen. Im Jahr 2011 wurden weltweit mehr als 3109 Strände und über 638 Marinas mit der Blauen Flagge ausgezeichnet. Für Europa werden die Auswertungsergebnisse jeweils am 5. Juni des Jahres bekanntgegeben. Für 2011/2012 hat die Internationale Jury Griechenland die Blaue Flagge für 394 Strände und 9 Marinas vergeben 
( s. Blue Flag beaches). Damit liegt Griechenland hinter Spanien (583/83) weltweit auf Platz 2. Die ausgezeichneten Strände verteilen sich rings um Griechenland. Die meisten befinden sich jedoch an der griechischen Ostküste und Chalkidiki , den Dodekanes, dieser Inselgruppe in der östlichen Ägäis (Rhodos, Kos) und auf Kreta. Sunbathing and swimming - in the crystal clear water in blue and turquoise colors of the Aegean or Ionian Sea. Every year, the " Foundation for Environmental Education " ( FEE), the coveted "Blue Flag" for beaches and marinas . The presentation of this distinction is based on careful consideration of the water quality and the review of the environmental situation. This internationally operating organization is supported by national organizations. In Greece, this is the " Hellenic Society for Nature Conservation " based in Athens.
